I'd rather build it than talk about it.

I'm Yanlai. I'm doing a master's in ECE at Rowan, working with Dr. Ying Tang. My day mostly sits between computer vision, multi-modal LLMs, and the front-end work that turns a research idea into a page someone can open in a browser.

The main thing right now is cockpit visual understanding: reading HUD gauges, sectional charts, weather radar, and traffic scenes the way a pilot would. Alongside that I work on PING, putting LLM peer agents inside learning games, and I keep a handful of small web tools online because people still use them.

Before Rowan I did a BS in AI at Chongqing Jiaotong University and spent most of a year at Lenovo writing OCR and handwriting-recognition pipelines. I write things up when I've figured something out worth writing down, and I put code online when someone else might use it.

currently working on

Cockpit symbology + multi-modal reasoning ,
in real cockpit scenes.

i.

Reading the HUD

Finding HUD gauges, radar altimeter, airspeed tape, and attitude indicator inside raw cockpit photos and videos, and reading what they say.

ii.

Charts & radar

Tying sectional charts, weather intensity, and terrain back to where the aircraft is on the map, with reasoning you can step through.

iii.

Traffic & display

TCAS-style traffic awareness and AR overlays, built as live web prototypes you can click through instead of paper figures.

Places I've worked.

  1. Aviation Symbology & Visual Understanding

Rowan University · Tang Lab 2025 — present
cockpit visuals HUD instruments multi-modal LLM aviation systems
    • Building cockpit-reading pipelines that cover HUD gauges, sectional charts, weather radar, and traffic scenes.
    • Shipping aviation-symbology features: overlays, chart/radar parsing, TCAS-style display logic, and screen-space indicator behavior.
    • Gluing the model, the UI, and the aviation context together so the prototypes feel closer to a tool than a demo.
  2. AI Developer — PING

    Rowan University 2024 — present
LLM peer agents gamified learning personalization
    • Writing LLM peer agents, adaptive learning modules, and the game-side logic students actually see.
    • Owning prompt design, interaction logic, and the front-end, so each student gets the version that fits them.
  3. Computer Vision Intern — Lenovo

    Beijing, CN Nov 2023 — Aug 2024
    OCR handwriting recognition pattern recognition
    • Wrote two OCR / handwriting-recognition production pipelines — one online (live strokes), one offline (scanned images).
